I'll read The Ocean Calls: A Haenyeo Mermaid Story and discuss what part of the story is fiction and what part of the story is nonfiction. We'll talk about how we can also take our vacations and turn them into great stories. Of course, along the way, students will learn about the haenyeo & how they care for the ocean.

Rice from Heaven: The Secret Mission to Feed North Koreans

Learn how this picture book came to be from the author's participation with North Korean refugees to picture book completion. Facts about North & South Korea will be shared. Children will learn about empathy and gratefulness. Optional: craft

the other side of tomorrow~graphic novel

for children ages 9 & up
I'll read an excerpt of this novel, discuss the background of North Korean refugees, and share how this book came to be. Students can try writing a lyrical graphic novel page.
